The Design for Community course at the University of Michigan-Flint specializes in working with non-profit organizations and community partners in Flint and the surrounding areas. As a member of this course, I was able to take part in a project to help "revitalize the memory care unit/wing at Kith Haven to respond to the needs of its residents and caregivers, with the focus on improving accessibility and quality of life." We used participant observation and research surrounding memory care. I specifically got to know residents and their needs, conducted an interview with a knowledgable professor, and gathered research on memory boxes and activity walls in memory care. I designed mockups of memory boxes and an activity wall so that the community partner could better visualize the concept.
